"Work on You" — A Message for a Better Nigeria
Too often in Nigeria, we are quick to place the blame for the country’s problems solely on our leaders. While leadership is undeniably critical, we tend to overlook the role that we, the citizens, also play in shaping our nation — for better or worse.
Having worked within a federal government setting, I have witnessed firsthand how some individuals engage in corrupt practices that the government may never even be aware of. No one told them to act that way; they made those choices on their own. So, can we really say it's only the government’s fault?
The truth is, for Nigeria to move forward, every one of us must take responsibility. Change begins not just from the top, but from within each of us. Leaders must be accountable, yes — public funds should not be spent on luxury while citizens struggle to survive on meager earnings. But at the same time, followers must also hold themselves to a higher standard. We must stop cutting corners, stop enabling corruption, and start building the kind of country we dream of.
That’s the message behind one of the songs from my upcoming album, titled "Work on You." It’s a call to self-reflection, to personal growth, and to collective responsibility. Before we ask Nigeria to be better, we must first ask ourselves: Am I doing my part?
Let’s stop waiting for change to come from the top. Let’s start working on ourselves — and together, we can build the Nigeria we all deserve
